Chapter 16 - Discovery Passage

Separating Quadra and Sonora Islands from Vancouver Island, this passage is a main route for vessels of all types and sizes traveling up and down the Inside Passage. Campbell River is the largest city in this area and has three breakwater moorages. Discovery Harbour Marina, in the northernmost basin, has a fuel dock and is close to shopping, a marine supply store and full service boatyard, and local attractions like the Wei Wai Kum House of Treasures where First Nations Artists display and sell unique pieces. Across Discovery Passage on Quadra Island, local artists also display their work at the Quadra Island Studio Tour each June. This Island is the site of beautiful marine parks like Rebecca Spit Marine Park. Rebecca Spit at Drew Harbour with its inviting sandy beaches is a favorite anchorage. The Discovery Passage area is known for its spectacular tidal currents and rapids, and some of the best examples are the Yuculta, Arran and Dent Rapids found near Stuart and Dent Islands. Once you clear the rapids, Dent Island Lodge is a lovely retreat for boaters.
