Chapter 10 - Central Gulf Islands & East Vancouver Island Coast

The center of population and commerce in the Gulf Islands is Salt Spring Island. It is a treasure trove of wildlife, artists, pastoral farms and vineyards, and picturesque bays and harbours. The largest harbour, Ganges, has ample moorage available.  At the harbour's end, Salt Spring Marina offers spectacular views of the harbour and is convenient to a marine service center. Nearby shops are full of locally grown and harvested offerings – salt spring cheeses, salt spring lamb, seafood, wine, jam, honey, herbs, flowers, and more. Many of these products highlight the menus of local eateries that range from casual café fare to five star award-winning dining. Across Trincomali Channel from Salt Spring Island is Galiano Island. Popular stops here include Montague Provincial Marine Park and Sturdies Bay.  For something a little different and definitely indulgent, book a yoga class or spa treatment at the Galiano Oceanfront Inn (ask about mooring on their seasonal dock while your enjoy a Resort service). Near the park, Montague Harbour Marina not only has moorage, fuel, and provisions, but they also scoop out some great ice cream cones!   Thetis Island, one of the smaller and less developed of the Central Gulf Islands offers a quiet, rural experience. From moorage in Telegraph Harbour, one can walk to a popular summer’s Market, stop by a coffee roasting company, or even hop a ferry for a day trip to Chemainus on the east coast of Vancouver Island. But Chemainus, like it’s neighbors, Maple Bay, and Cowichan Bay are ports of call you’ll also want to visit by boat. From the Maple Bay Marina in Birds Eye Cove, area attractions like golf courses and the BC Forest Discovery Centre are easily reached.
